Deep Community Roots
Originally formed in 1995 in the old National Guard Armory building, Artist’s Amuck, was an artists cooperative providing low cost studios and communal equipment to ten Bay St. Louis artists working in ceramics, weaving, woodworking, and fiber.
Our longest serving founding member and president, Regan Carney, kept the cooperative alive almost single handedly for 28 years, teaching classes and experimenting with clay. Regan was a stalwart member of the Bay St. Louis arts community and a tireless advocate for arts awareness and outreach. Her career culminated with a retrospective of her ceramic work at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum in 2022 in Biloxi, MS. After a long illness, Regan left us on February 19, 2023. She is fondly remembered and greatly missed.
Thanks to the tireless work of Nina Cork and Katrina Niolet, the co-op survived the transition period after Regan's passing and is now stronger than ever.
Currently, the Bay Artists Cooperative, a 501C3 non-profit organization, is home to 14 working artists and is the oldest operating artist cooperative in Mississippi. With a nod to the past, some artist members teach classes and workshops, and we open our doors to the public twice a year for Art’s Alive art festival produced by The Arts, Hancock County, and our November Holiday Open House art sale.
